deutsch français The Thomas Bernhard Archive at Villa Stonborough-Wittgenstein in Gmunden concentrates on making the literary estates of Thomas Bernhard and his grandfather, the writer Johannes Freumbichler, accessible for scholarly, literary and publishing work.
The core of the archive is Thomas Bernhard's entire literary estate, which is being classified as part of a research project supported by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The majority of published works are incorporated in the estate in the form of typescripts. A considerable range of unpublished works has likewise been preserved in large quantities. This is complemented by correspondence with publishers and theatres and Bernhard's collection of newspaper cuttings, among other items. By establishing a library, press documentation, a theatre collection, a collection of photographs and audiovisual documents and finally a biographical collection the archive will become a place which provides extensive resources for research into the life and work of Thomas Bernhard. The archive was established by the Thomas Bernhard Private Foundation, and the Villa Stonborough-Wittgenstein was provided and adapted for this purpose by the province of Upper Austria.
