deutsch français Thomas Bernhard bought his farmhouse in Ohlsdorf, Upper Austria in 1965 and spent the next 15 years painstakingly restoring it. The building now provides an astute insight into the life and development of its former owner.
Thomas Bernhard's literary works were and are closely linked to this domicile. Bernhard's building and renovation work, the local landscape and people all feature in his earlier prose in particular. The Bernhard House, with its unchanged characteristic furnishing, is the central Thomas Bernhard memorial and has been open to the public since 1990. Entrance and guided tours are provided free of charge to ITBS members.
